Gibraltar Visa

Gibraltar Visa Information for Dallas TX Travelers

Gibraltar is one of the world’s most unusual destinations – a British Overseas Territory clinging to a rocky peninsula at the southern tip of Spain, just 2.6 square miles, visible from Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar, and home to the famous Barbary macaques the only wild monkeys in Europe. For US citizens in Dallas and DFW, Gibraltar is accessible without a visa but its entry rules are completely separate from both the UK and Spain. AA Passport & Visa in Richardson TX ensures your passport is valid before your Gibraltar visit. Open 7 days a week. Walk-ins welcome. Call 972-231-1600.

Gibraltar

There is no visa required for U.S. citizens traveling for business, tourist or official or diplomatic travel purposes for a maximum stay of 90 days. A valid US Passport (must be valid for 6 months beyond the date of entry) is required.

Register your trip on-line with the U.S. Embassy in this country. Millions of Americans travel abroad every year and encounter no difficulties. However, U.S. embassies and consulates assist nearly 200,000 Americans each year who are victims of crime, accident, or illness, or whose family and friends need to contact them in an emergency. When an emergency happens, or if natural disaster, terrorism, or civil unrest strikes during your foreign travel, the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate can be your source of assistance and information. By registering your trip, you help the embassy or consulate locate you when you might need them the most. Registration is voluntary and costs nothing, but it should be a big part of your travel planning and security.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. US citizens do not need a visa to visit Gibraltar. American passport holders can enter Gibraltar visa-free. However Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory with its own immigration rules completely separate from the United Kingdom and from Spain. Most DFW travelers reach Gibraltar by flying to Malaga or Seville in southern Spain and then taking a bus or taxi to Gibraltar across the land border. Gibraltar Airport also receives direct flights from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Manchester. The border crossing between Spain and Gibraltar on foot or by car is generally quick for US passport holders though queues can be long at busy periods. Gibraltar is also easily accessible by ferry from Tarifa Spain or Algeciras Spain to Morocco making it a perfect stopover for a Spain-Morocco itinerary.

The Rock of Gibraltar is a limestone monolith rising 1,398 feet above sea level at the entrance to the Mediterranean. Its strategic position has made it contested territory for centuries. Today Gibraltar offers the Nature Reserve where the famous Barbary macaques roam freely and can be photographed up close, the Great Siege Tunnels carved by hand through the rock in the 18th century, St. Michael’s Cave a spectacular natural cavern, and panoramic views across to Morocco and Spain. The territory is also duty-free making it popular for shopping.

Yes for most visitors. There is a land border crossing between Gibraltar and the Spanish city of La Linea de la Concepcion. US citizens can cross in both directions freely. The crossing can have queues particularly during morning and evening commuter periods and on weekends. Note that when you cross from Gibraltar into Spain you are entering the Schengen Area so Schengen rules apply from that point. AA Passport & Visa advises DFW travelers combining Gibraltar with Spain to plan their Schengen days carefully.

Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound which is pegged at parity with the British Pound Sterling. Gibraltar Pounds are not accepted outside Gibraltar including in Spain. However British Pounds Sterling are accepted in Gibraltar at par. Euros are also widely accepted in Gibraltar’s shops and restaurants at approximately the current exchange rate. US dollars are not typically accepted. ATMs in Gibraltar dispense Gibraltar Pounds. If you are combining Gibraltar with Spain bring or exchange euros for your Spanish portion of the trip.
