For China L tourist visa applications submitted in the United States, the Chinese Embassy states that applicants generally are not required to provide round-trip flight reservations, hotel reservations, an itinerary, or an invitation letter.

A China Business Visa, commonly known as the M Visa, is intended for travelers visiting China for commercial and trade activities. Applicants generally need supporting documents related to the commercial activity from a business or trade partner in China. The F Visa is different from the M Visa and is generally used for exchanges, visits, study tours, and similar non-commercial activities. The appropriate visa category depends on the actual purpose of travel.

For U.S. citizens, the current regular Chinese visa consular fee is $140. The reduced fee schedule is currently extended through December 31, 2026. Express processing, when available and approved, carries an additional $25 consular fee.
Regular Embassy processing is generally about 4 working days after passport submission when the application meets all requirements. Expedited processing may be approximately 3 working days for eligible urgent cases. Some applications may take longer depending on individual review.

The China work visa type Z is a single-entry visa available for foreigners who have obtained a job offer from a China-incorporated company. It is also given to their family members. This visa is the most common visa type for people who work in the country and is valid for 3 months. To obtain a work visa (Z), you must have an employment license or a work permit issued by the Chinese government. But you must apply to get a Residence Permit within 30 days of entry into China. How long you end up staying in China will be determined by the Temporary Residence Permit. The work permit can be renewed if you change employers.

U.S. citizens generally need an appropriate Chinese visa for ordinary tourism, business, family visits, work, or study unless they qualify for a specific visa-exemption or transit program. The correct visa category depends on the purpose of travel, and the final visa type and validity are determined by Chinese consular authorities.
A China tourist visa application generally requires a passport with more than six months of validity and at least two blank visa pages, the completed online visa application, supporting identity and residency documents, and any additional documents requested during review. U.S.-based tourist applicants are generally no longer required to provide flight bookings, hotel reservations, an itinerary, or an invitation letter.
A China Business M Visa generally requires the standard China visa application documents plus commercial or trade-related supporting documents from a business partner in China.
