China Business Visa Requirements for U.S. Travelers: 2026 Guide

China Business Visa Requirements for U.S. Travelers

U.S. travelers visiting China for commercial or trade activities generally apply for a China M Visa, commonly known as a China business visa. The application process changed significantly with China’s newer online visa system, so using current requirements is important.

AA Passport & Visa Expedite Services helps Dallas and DFW business travelers prepare their China visa applications, review supporting documents, and understand the current submission process.

Quick Answer: What Is a China M Visa?

The Chinese Embassy defines the M Visa as the visa category for travelers going to China for commercial and trade activities. It is different from the F Visa, which is generally used for exchanges, visits, study tours, and similar non-commercial activities.

Step 1: Use the Current China Online Visa Application System

The Chinese Embassy in the United States introduced the newer COVA online visa system in September 2025.

Applicants must complete the application online and upload the required documents for preliminary review. When the application’s status changes to “Passport to be submitted,” the applicant or an authorized agent can submit the passport, barcode application information page, and required originals.

Texas falls within the jurisdiction of the Chinese Embassy’s Washington, D.C. visa office.

Step 2: Check Your Passport

The current basic requirements include a passport with:

  • more than six months of remaining validity; and
  • at least two blank visa pages.

Applicants also upload the passport bio page and other documents required for their circumstances.

Step 3: Prepare the Business Invitation Documents

The central supporting requirement for an M Visa is documentation related to the commercial activity, issued by a trade partner in China.

Current Embassy guidance states that a qualifying invitation should contain information about the invited traveler, details of the planned trip and commercial purpose, and information about the inviting organization or party in China.

Details normally include the traveler’s identity information, reason for travel, expected arrival and departure, places to be visited, relationship with the inviting party, and information about who will cover travel costs.

The inviting party’s information should also be clearly identified.

Step 4: Upload Proof of Residence and Other Basic Documents

Applicants in the United States may also need proof of residence, such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or bank document.

Foreign nationals residing in the U.S. may need documentation showing their legal U.S. immigration status. Additional documentation may apply depending on previous Chinese citizenship, name changes, or prior Chinese visas.

China Visa Government Fee for U.S. Citizens

The Chinese Embassy has extended its reduced visa-fee schedule through December 31, 2026.

The regular visa fee for a U.S. citizen is currently $140. Express service, when available for an urgent situation, adds $25 per visa.

AA Passport & Visa service fees are separate from the Chinese government visa fee.

How Long Does a China Business Visa Take?

The Embassy currently lists:

Regular service: approximately 4 business days
Express service: approximately 3 business days for urgent situations.

These times are calculated from passport submission, not from the day the online application is first started. Some applications may require additional review and take longer.

Get the Documents Right Before Submission

Business-visa applications often involve more supporting documentation than standard tourist applications. Incorrect invitation details, missing documents, passport issues, or inconsistent application information can lead to delays.
