What to Do If Your Passport Is Lost Before International Travel

What to Do If Your Passport Is Lost Before International Travel

Discovering that your passport is missing shortly before an international trip can be stressful, but there is a clear process for reporting and replacing it.

The most important step is to act quickly. If your valid U.S. passport is lost or stolen, the Department of State recommends reporting it immediately so the passport can be cancelled and protected from misuse.

Dallas and DFW travelers can contact AA Passport & Visa for help reviewing the replacement application, documents, passport photo, and available processing options.

Quick Answer: What Should You Do First?

If your passport is actually missing, report the valid passport lost or stolen and then apply for a replacement.

Reporting the passport does not automatically replace it. You must submit a new passport application if you still need to travel.

Step 1: Report the Passport Lost or Stolen

The Department of State currently provides three ways to report a valid lost or stolen passport:

  1. Online using its passport form system.
  2. By mail using Form DS-64.
  3. While applying in person for a replacement using Form DS-11.

The Department of State says the online option is the fastest and currently cancels the passport within approximately one business day.

Do not report an expired passport as lost or stolen.

Step 2: Understand That the Old Passport Becomes Invalid

Once you report a valid passport lost or stolen, it is cancelled.

If you later find the passport, you cannot use it for international travel.

Step 3: Apply for a Replacement Using DS-11

A lost or stolen passport replacement generally requires applying again in person using Form DS-11.

Applicants should prepare proof of U.S. citizenship, acceptable photo identification, required photocopies, one compliant passport photo, and the applicable government fees.

When completing the replacement application, explain where and when the passport was lost or stolen. If you filed a police report, provide a copy. A police report is not mandatory in every case.

How Much Does a Lost Passport Replacement Cost?

For an adult applicant age 16 or older, current DS-11 fees are:

Replacement serviceGovernment fee
Passport Book Application$130
Acceptance Facility Fee$35
Adult Passport Book Total$165
Optional Expedited Processing+$60
Expedited Adult Book Total$225
Optional 1–3 Day Return Delivery+$26.87

AA Passport & Visa service fees are separate from U.S. government fees.

What If Your Flight Is Coming Up Soon?

Routine Department of State processing currently takes approximately 4–6 weeks, while expedited processing takes approximately 2–3 weeks, excluding mailing time.

If you have international travel within 14 calendar days, you may qualify for an urgent passport-agency appointment and will generally need proof of travel.

Do not assume that same-day replacement is guaranteed. Appointment availability and eligibility depend on the travel date and Department of State requirements.

What If You Lost the Passport While Already Overseas?

If your passport is lost or stolen after you have already left the United States, the process is different. Contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for assistance with an emergency or replacement travel document.

Prepare Before You Visit

If you’re replacing a passport, gather as much information as possible about the lost passport, including the passport number if available, issue date, and circumstances surrounding the loss.

AA Passport can help Dallas-area travelers review their paperwork and understand their available options before applying.
